KAPPA ALPHA
PSI FOUNDATION OF MARYLAND, INC.
Of the many important
problems facing the United States, perhaps one of
the most important, is the socioeconomic dilemma
posed by the inability of Federal, State and local
governments to deal effectively with the problems
in our inner-cities. It is this dilemma, that
prompted the Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni
Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., to
develop the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of
Maryland, Inc., in order that increased resources
could be made available to further the community
outreach programs of the fraternity, aimed at
addressing some of the vital problems in the local
communities. The Foundation can be reached by mail
at: 3901Kencrest Court, Mitchellville, MD, 20721;
phone: 301.262.9333; or fax: 301.464.5427.

HISTORY The Kappa
Alpha Psi Foundation of Maryland, Inc., was
incorporated in 1990 in the State of Maryland as a
nonprofit entity to provide programs benefiting
youths in Prince George's County, Maryland. The
programs operated by the Foundation are primarily
oriented towards African-American males. The
Foundation's federal tax identification number is
52-1685739.
The Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of
Maryland, Inc. (Foundation) is a nonprofit
charitable entity that has been granted tax-exempt
status by the Internal Revenue Service as a
Section 501 (C)(3) organization. The Foundation is
an affiliate of the Hyattsville/Landover (MD)
Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
Incorporated.
Prior to the incorporation of the
Foundation, the Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni
Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity sought to
participate in community activities in conjunction
with programs initiated by other organizations,
but with emphasis on African-American male
activities. These activities were demanding in
their requirement for human and financial
resources. Thus, the fraternity, recognizing the
human suffering and human need, decided to
establish a nonprofit Foundation.
MISSION The
primary mission of the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation
of Maryland, Inc., is to provide programs that
benefit the youths of Prince George's County,
Maryland, with a primary focus on African-American
males. The Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of Maryland,
is uniquely qualified to perform this mission,
since the skills and experience of its members and
the parent fraternity, are sufficiently suited to
the tasks.
MANAGEMENT The Foundation is administered by a
Board of Directors that governs the affairs of the
Foundation and provides oversight on foundation
funds. Administrative costs are kept to a minimum
and are budgeted at less than 5% of the annual
budget. An annual financial report is available
upon request.
MEMBERSHIP There are approximately 100 regular,
financial members, most of whom are professionals
with backgrounds and experiences covering
virtually every discipline, including medicine,
dentistry, engineering, marketing, education, etc.
Many members have advanced degrees. When
particularly specialized skills and knowledge are
needed to meet current requirements, the Kappa
Alpha Psi Foundation of Maryland, Inc., augments
its working force, by bringing in specialist from
universities, industry and other organizations,
who have the required expertise in furtherance of
the Foundation's programs.
PRINCIPLES OF
OPERATION To
assure quality and objectivity, as well as
usefulness, the Foundation and its sponsors work
closely in defining the goals of the Foundation's
work, and take great care that the analyses and
conclusions are the Foundation's alone. Annually,
the Foundation, in conjunction with the
Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Chapter of Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Inc., convenes a retreat, where
policy and programmatic planning, analyses and
evaluation are primary agenda items. At this time,
the Foundation' s budget, along with that of the
fraternity, are established, as well as a
determination as to the fraternity's requirements
of the Foundation. All of the Foundation's
programs are conducted within the scope of its
mandate, and in accordance with the rules and
regulations governing 501 ( C ) ( 3 )
organizations.
